The Maharashtra government has appointed a 66-member state security council that will advise it on how to secure Mumbai and the rest of the state. The only problem is that most of the council's members have little or no knowledge of security. So, what do Javed Akthar, Jabbar Patel and Piyush Pandey have in common? They are all security experts now. At least the Maharashtra government thinks so.And, it's not just them. Owners of five-star hotels, IT experts and politicians are also in the same council. "We will form sub committees in this council that will submit their reports, which, can be followed up in the cabinet," said Ashok Chavan, chief minister, Maharashtra. The newly formed body is in addition to the State Security Commission. It's a body that the government had promised the Bombay High Court it would appoint soon after 26/11. But a month later there were no signs of that happening. So is the new council really needed? "Instead of such an eyewash and appointing such useless committees they should do something that will actually help improve this city's security," said Y C Pawar, former Mumbai Police Commissioner.Wonder if anyone's listening?
